This number shows up as "private" and calls at least 3 times a day. I don’t know what their problem is or who it is, (I’m assuming it’s some automated machine) but it’s getting to the point where I’m starting to lose it.

Isn’t there some way to trace a private number?
I have answered before and all I get is scratchy silence. I am most definitely sure it’s just a machine, but I’d still like to know the number and see if I can get it stopped.
I don’t really want to change my phone number because it’s too much of a hassle to tell everyone.

Call your phone company and follow their instructions.

Just call your provider and have it blocked

It’s not the job of the police to trace annoying phone calls, instead, contact your cell phone provider.

I have a better idea, there is a way to block all incomming phone calls with a blocked number. They will simply get the message "The caller you are trying to reach is not accepting calls from blocked numbers".

Call your service provider to see how you can do this.

most likely, just take it to your local cops and they can hook it up to a machine and trace it.

Not really. Unless the person is harassing you (and simply calling without a direct connection is not harassment), the police could not get the number from the phone company. There is not physical way to obtain the number, but the phone company has the records. The problem is that the person who is calling has PAID for the right to be anonymous, and the phone company is not able, legally, to release that number except through a valid court order. Since no crime has been committed, that just won’t happen.

There is none thing you could try: answer the phone and ASK who it is?

I don’t think they can trace the number who is calling you if it is private. Although, you should be aware of your surroundings like listening to conversations, noticing any odd behavior, or answer the phone. Also, document it. Answer the phone, but be as quiet as you can be and see what they say. Write it down and after about a month see if you have found who it is. If not give your documentations to the police.

why dont you answer the phone and put an end to it?
sounds to me like you are afraid to answer the phone, which means you probably have credit issues, which means you are a drain on society. So, if you take your cell phone to the police, you might as well ask for a cell.

You know who it is so call him back and tell him to leave you alone or you will call the cops.

how do you know its the same person calling?
    maybe someone dial wrong?
havent you ever dial a wrong number or are you so pefect you never did
also you take it the cellphone company not the police

Man, the "answers" your getting are jsut absurd. Remember, 95% of the people here are passing off bad GUESSES as answers.

Not only will the cops not do anything, neither will the phone company. There is nothing you can do and take it from someone who’s been through this already. The phone company told me to just set the phone up so blocked numbers won’t ring. There is nothing you can do outside of changing your number.

The police won’t be able to easily find out who it is unless there is probable cause to obtain a court order for the service provider, which just recieving calls without some type of verbal threat or harassment wouldn’t prove. What I would recommend, if it is seriously becoming a problem to file a police report against it. keep the call log on your phone to show how many times they have called your number. Depending on where you live, their may be statutes regarding electronic harsassment. You could also have the number blocked by your service provider. Or before all of that, answer the phone, tell them that you are going to contact the police, and see if it stops.

And when you answer, who is it and what do they say? Or, if you routinely don’t answer private calls, just block them. Call your provider for information on how to do so.

Or do it the easy way, change your number and don’t give it out to anyone you don’t want calling you.
